New Granny Blanket

I started a new blanket made entirely of little granny squares.

These are my first 7 with many, many more to go. I simply love these as they are so quick to make up. It feels like I made these lickety split!!

Scrap Granny Stars in Crochet Art Project

I am working on a crochet art project called Swaddle. It's going to include more than 12 separate crochet pieces that explore the concept of women's communication styles in relationships. This project includes many different crochet types such as hyperbolic crochet, surface crochet and tapestry crochet. However, I have to confess that my favorite part of the project is working on the classic granny square.

One of the pieces in Swaddle will include a large granny square made using yarn scraps. I lined all of my yarn scraps up in order of color. I basically followed the order of the colors in the rainbow and then added the neutrals in throughout the piece. I tied it all up together to make one large magic yarn ball and then I started crocheting the large granny. It was so fun to do and I enjoyed the result!

This is my first posting here.

I recently finished crocheting another ripple throw.

This one I'm calling "Candy Cane".

The ripple stitch is called "Storm Clouds" and is from Jan Eaton's book "200 Ripple Patterns".

How about these cushions that I made? They are presents for my youngest sons' teachers.

This granny cushin was nice to make. I used acryl, very cheap even, and a crochethook nr. 3 (dutch size). That works fast!

But I also loved this cushion to crochet! And maybe I even find this giant granny more beautiful on the couch...

Also this is a crochet cushion for the youngest teacher. Some 'hip' collors and this was nice to make too. I did not use a pattern but just did some fantasy knitting...

As I liked to lable my work, I even aplicated my lables; LEMLEM. Looks very serious haha!

The pattern is a royal pain to figure out, since it is sincerely not well-written. It's almost like they tried to make it as confusing as possible. But once you figure out how it's supposed to work, it all makes sense and is easy as pie. I'm planning on doing a photo tutorial to go along with the pattern, and maybe even rewriting the darn thing so other folks can understand it. It's a cute bag, and I'd like for others to be able to make it without so much frustration.

Spiral Grannies

My fascination with spiral grannies started with this post on crochetme.com

Of course I couldn't let it go and had to try it immediately. It took me a while to get the hang of it, but after that it was easy. I made a few changes to the pattern to make it more dense.

I then tried to make the spiral go the other way. After a few tries I realized the only way to do this is to use my other hand and do a mirror image. I am naturally left-handed but I crochet with my right hand. Using my left hand for crocheting was not as easy as I thought, but I managed to finish two blocks. (It was very slow going!)

I used this pattern to make a blanket for my baby daughter.

In my next post I will show how I adapted this pattern to make pentagons and hexagons.

This is what I am working on now! I am trying really hard to use up a lot of my stash yarn. I don't want to make any yarn purchases untill I have used up a lot that I have at home. So far this year I have done well with only having bought one skein of yarn I needed to make a shawl. :)

This afghan has been a lot of fun to make so far. The only bad part is all of the ends...... But I plan to crochet the ends in when I add the edging to this. So it shouldn't be too awful. :)

What do all of you think about making this blog "grannies ripples and more...." instead of just a blog about granny squares and ripples I was thinking of allowing posting about "All Things crochet".

Many of us Crochet all sorts of things such as Amigurumi, pot holders,clothing, etc... and seeing how we all love crochet It would be nice to share ALL of our Crochet projects with each other.

So what do you think???
Should we make it "grannies, ripples and MORE" ?? Or just stick to sharing the ripple and granny projects here??

Hello everyone! My name is Melissa. This is my first time posting here. I have been watching this blog for awhile now. It looks like such a fun group to be a part of. And of course I LOVE to make ripple afghans. And am looking forward to making a Granny Stripe afghan soon. I even have my colors picked out for the Granny Stripe. :)
The picture above is of my Bold and Bright Ripple afghan based on Attic24's pattern. I just love her blog.
I am doing most of my stripes in sets of two. But have some in sets of 4 and some just one single stripe. I am now almost halfway done with this one. YAY!!

This is my first post to this forum, but I have been reading and looking at all the wonderful things being created here for quite awhile!! I am a new crocheter and decided to start with the granny stripe blanket from attic24. At first, I found it a little difficult and awkward - I have been knitting for a few years and this was completely different - but now I am in love with crochet. I can't believe I wasn't hit with the crochet "bug" a long time ago!
I have been using stash yarn, but wound up purchasing a few more colors each time I went to JoAnn Fabrics or Michaels. Both these stores carry the Vanna's yarn and this blanket is primarily in that yarn. I am thoroughly enjoying working on this and see much more crochet in my future :o)

Ripples for Veterans

I spend a lot of my crochet time working on lapghans and afghans for my local VA hospital. The wards there are very sparse with nothing but plain white sheets on the beds. I think crochet afghans help to brighten things up a little, and the veterans seem to appreciate them.

My Very First Ripples Blanket!

Absolutely thrilled to be able to contribute here! Having started and stalled on a previous ripples blanket, I am so thrilled that I actually finished this particular ripples project!

Color choice made to suit user - DH! I resisted any pinks or reds!

Managed to have three repeats of that Blue Color Combo!

p.s.: the two triangles are for a doily project

Now.... to salvage the other ripples piece .... all beige and raspberry ~ mine!

I just finished this Baby Ripple Blanket for my little one to be. I used the pattern, Hedgerows, from Jan Eaton’s 200 Ripple Stitch Patterns and I’m really happy with the way it turned out.

The pattern is very easy to memorize so that speeds up the crocheting time and I love working with half double crochets so this project was right up my alley. I finished off the sides with one row or single crochet and one row of reverse double crochet. The darker blue is more of a Wedgewood blue and not as dark as it looks in the picture, but does go very nicely with the baby blue and white. I used Encore Worsted which can be put in the washer and dryer, so that makes it perfect for long term use.

This post is a wee bit off the topic of grannies and ripples, but it is applicable, and I'm hoping for a lot of feedback- I'm really interested to know how others work these stitches. Sorry for the off-topicness!

So, I recently saw a tutorial from a British crocheter on how to do a US double crochet (known as a treble crochet in the UK). At first I skipped over it to get to the part of the pattern I was interested in, but when I came back to it, I noticed something odd. The instructions for this stitch differed from the way I learned to do it. At first I thought, "Oh, she must have gotten something mixed up!," mostly because it sounded like an extended double crochet to me. At this point, I decided to do a little research on the interwebs.

Guess what I found out?

Apparently, I have been working the double crochet incorrectly for as long as I've been crocheting! It's pretty odd too, because it's neither a double nor a half double, but seemingly a hybrid of the two. So, here's the difference:

The instructions I found for it indicate that you should:

insert hook into stitch

yo, draw through first loop (the stitch that's on the hook, so that there are now 3 loops on the hook)

yo, draw through two loops (so that now there are two loops)

yo, draw through the last two loops.

In contrast, the way I was taught is as follows:

yo, insert hook into stitch

yo, draw through first TWO loops on hook (that's the stitch that's on the hook plus the first loop) so that there are 2 loops left on the hook

yo, draw through last two loops on the hook

Furthermore, the instructions I found for a half double crochet were:

yo, insert hook into stitch

yo, draw through first loop (leaving three loops on the hook)

yo, draw through remaining three loops

Is this just a different tradition in crochet stitches? I could swear I have seen this double crochet in some of my mother's old crochet books. I don't plan on changing the way I crochet over this, but I did find it to be somewhat odd. Does my method sound familiar to anyone else out there?

Nine-Patch Afghan Progress

Hello everyone! I'm happy to be a new member of this group blog, and hope to contribute to this community. :) If you get a chance, please check out my blog, Stitch-Witchery.

I finished the first block of my nine-patch granny squares afghan. I'm so happy with it. Ridiculously, deliriously happy. I took some photos of the block I have finished and the granny squares for the next one. Now I just have to finish the other eleven blocks, put them all together, and put a border around the whole shebang. So, working at my usual rate, it looks like I might just finish it up around December (or, uh, maybe early next year?).

As I am just like everyone else I still love ripples and are still making them. The photo above is the latest one I have finished for a baby gift. Isn't it funny how we all use basically the same pattern but each one is special and beautiful in its own right? My favorite is all the bright stripes but for this little one it needed to be a soft green so it would match the rest of his room. I just want to say how beautiful every creation is that has been put on this blog. I think we are all very lucky to have a place to come and view all the nice work and to have people that can answer questions for us about an idea we would like to create. So I thank you all. A ripply-type pillow cover

Hello! It's been a while but I've started a new pillow cover. It's not quite a ripple, but it does make a ripply type shape. It's quite fun to do, I must say! It's one from the Harmony Crochet guide...the 'catherine wheel.' I just love those! Too many patterns I want to make though... :)

Here it is...
One thing I'm quite peeved about though is that it works up all wonky. And I've followed the directions to a tee. I didn't realize it was happening until it was too late...I'm too lazy to undo any more than 4 rows! ;) I'm thinking maybe if I'd decreased one combination on one side and increased on the other it might have worked out better??? Hello, I've been following everyone's lovely ripples for some time and wanted to share some of mine. They all look a bit bumpy and uneven, but that's because they've been ~~stuffed~~ folded neatly into bags because I'm out of wool for them. I seem to pick wool's from hell for my ripples because I always manage to pick a colour/maker that my wool shop likes to discontinue as soon as I get a few rows under my belt. Grrr.

Anyway, here's where I'm up to with my tribute to Cath Kidston...

I've run out of the pale blue which is a James Brett 400g aran and (stupidly) I threw away the band so have no idea of the shade to order more now that my local shop stopped stocking it.

My next ripple has a Halloween theme and uses black, orange, purple and vari purple DK.

The shop picked the orange wool to stop stocking for this ripple and (again) I don't have a label so don't even know who makes this one. Double Grrrr.

My final ripple isn't really a problem to find wool for, as it's my oddment ripple. I just use whatever is leftover from other projects. Easy.

I'm not really loving this one though, as the colours are anything but complimentary together. However, I'm loving 'doing' it because there's something very relaxing about ripples.....as you all no doubt know already, lol.

I have been crocheting since I was 14. My next door neighbor, Carmen, taught me how to crochet. Have been going ever since. I have been stuck on Ripple Afghans for the last couple of years. But also have a Granny Square Scrap Blanket going. It is going on my bed when it's done. My current Ripples are a browns and orange afghan. And the newest one is a Pastel Ripple Afghan. I found my pattern for the Ripple Afghan over at Crochet Pattern Central. They have some awesome "free" patterns over there. You should go check it out. The actual pattern I use is here. Hooking for Grandma

I'm so glad I found Lucy's pattern. I don't know when I've enjoyed working with a single pattern so much before. The granny square Grandma Wagner taught me when I was young is the only thing that halfway compares. Grandma made lots of ripples in her crocheting career, so I hope she's pleased with how this one turned out.

Last year, my cousin's youngest daughter, Katie, got married, and Grandma asked if I'd crochet an afghan for her to give her as a wedding present. (Grandma's in a nursing home now and unfortunately doesn't see well enough to make the stitches.) Yeah, I will! I did that one in hdc blues, Katie's favorite color. This summer, her sister, Jennifer, is getting married, so I'm hooking for Grandma again. (I sort of want to put that on a T-shirt!) Jennifer's favorite color is, you guessed it!, purple, so that's what I used.

Granny Ripple Finished

I used a "G" hook and Simply Soft yarn in Brites. The Pattern comes from a small booklet called Nursery Favorites by Leisure Arts. But I simplified the pattern and if you want to do that also or prefer not to buy on line you can use this pattern.

The colors are Coconut, Mango, Watermelon, Lemonade, Lymelite, and Blue Mint. The pattern I used was five rows of each color and two rows of Coconut separating each color. I worked my way up to the center (blue) and as you can see I did a double center and then worked my way back down the color spectrum. I am pleased with it and hope they will be also but I would call it more of a crib blanket at this point since it is so large.

Tim's Surgery

Hi!

I am a friend of Kathy and Tim. Just a brief update on Tim's surgery. He came through surgery great. For a while he has been out of it!! But!! He is doing wonderful. On Wednesday they actually put him in his own room!! Kathy was SO excited that he is doing as well as he is!!! We have all been Praying for this success, and it looks like it paid off!!! Thank God for miracles.

As for myself, I want to thank all of you for the Prayers that have been sent up for these two wonderful people!! They are the BEST!!! And it looks like you love them as much as I do.

We will keep you posted!!!

One more hat done. This one is called Ripple Baby Hat and was made using the cotton flocked ribbon yarn and Sassy Stripes by Moda Dea in the color Rave. This was a quick hat to work up and would of been even faster if I had not chosen to change colors.

12 february; update! Now the afghan is ready for 1/3 of it's total size... I love how it comes out. I will repeat this pattern 3 times....

Winterred inspired me to another ripple...

I wil combine it with winterish white, maybe it wil give a kind of christmas feeling? Any way, it is a loooooong way to ripple this afghan..

Giant Granny

Here is the giant granny square I just finished.

It measures 45" square. It is made with Loops and Threads impeccable yarn. This is the first time I have used this yarn and I really enjoyed it. The stitches show really well and it seems like it will take to washing well also. I was especially thrilled because I bought the yarn on sale at Michael's for $1.49/ 4.5oz. ball. The colors in this blanket are White, Rouge, Cadet, Claret, Chocolate, Soft Taupe, Fern, True Blue, and True Gray. This is my first adult giant granny square and I must say I couldn't be happier with it. I still have one more row of white scallop trim to go on as the border, but I'm not sure if I can find the same dye lot now, so it may have to stay as is. Hope you like it!

Bright Baby Ripple

This ripple was completed a few weeks ago. It's a baby blanket with bright, cheery colors. I needed a break from pastels. The colors are red, slate blue, lemon yellow and a soft lime-y green. Red Heart and TLC essentials yarn used. I absolutely love this blanket. I was not sure how the colors would work at first, but when it was completed I absolutely fell in love with it. A little afraid of how scratchy the yarn felt at first (especially the Red Heart), but it washed up nice and soft. Hope you all like as well!

New ripple for the New Year!

Here is my first non-baby ripple blanket. It is huge! Will probably fit on queen size bed when completed. It is made with Caron Simply Soft acrylic and is really, really soft. The pattern was found on Attic24's site. Pattern is super simple and goes very quickly. Hope you like!

Well I started this ripple months and months ago, I was doing fine for a while and keeping up with it (a few rows a day) but then as summer really got going and I was out of the house more I neglected all of my craft projects! lol.
Then of course came Fall and with the holidays I really forgot all about my ripple blanket project.
Just thought I would post these pics today to let you see the progress so far... I suppose after Christmas with all the nasty weather in Jan and Feb here in Chicago I will have plenty of time to get back to it, and hopefully finish it up before spring really sets in!

Granny Twinkling Stars

These are very quick to make Granny Stars. They are made using 4ply worsted weight yarn and an J hook, they end up being 5" from point to point. I also made 2 from crochet thread using a size 7 metal hook and size 10 thread. They ended up being 2 14" from point to point. The thread ones did not show up very well in the photo though, but they are there!! It took only a few minutes to make these stars using the yarn, there are only 3 rows, and you feel like you are working on a granny square. The link I am including is to the site where she has a great tutorial for these stars and a Christmas tree also. The tutorials are listed in the right hand sidebar. At least go take a look and save this for next year if you don't need them now. But do make sure you save them because they are so quick and easy to do you will just fall in love with them. Never forget to look up to the stars 8>)

My grannyafghan is finnished!

I finnished my latest afghan!

I made a big-big-biiiiggg granny and made some little granny's at the ends...

I made the total border of the afghan a bit romantic...

And I used these collors as our interiour is white scandinavian style.

I worked about 5 months on this afghan, and now I will do some other projects. But maybe I will start another afghan with ripples next year...

Snooping

I was a holiday snooper. You know, one of those kids who sneaks around the house looking behind the pots and pans in the kitchen cupboards, under the hats in the coat closet, behind the curtains in my parents room and, just in case it was too obvious a place to hide goodies, in my piano bench under the sheet music. I am not proud of this, but my mother should be proud for hiding our gifts so well, that I never found anything that I can remember. We always had such delightful, fun surprises for us under the tree on Christmas mornings.

Each year, I try to make at least one little something for each person on my list and this year will be no exception. Would you like a peek? I need to be careful, because reading is not really like snooping unless there is something to snoop out, so you will just get a little peek. Don’t worry, I have pictures of finished items in their entirety to share with you after the wrapping is torn away and the bows are safely stowed for next year.

This is a special gifty for a blogging friend.

And this is for a special girl in my life.

This goes with that. She will love it.

And this? Well, this is quite a bit of project to take on so few days before gifting. Cross your fingers.

My Scraps Ripple...

It fits a Queen-size bed and is super-heavy. I made it with mostly Red Heart SS yarn. I was trying to get rid of it all because it makes my nose itch like crazy when I crochet with it.

A close-up of the edging which is five rounds of sc with 3sc in each corner, then the last round is *3dc in same stitch, skip a stitch, slip stitch in next stitch, skip a stitch*, repeat between * and * all the way around.

Soft Baby Granny Blanket

Once upon a time, I ordered some yarn ...

Some Rowan Cashcotton. I started granny-ing!

And as I did, the softness of the yarn and the combination of soft blue and aqua with vibrant geranium screamed out to me: "BABY"! Yes! This project must be something for a baby. A soft, cozy blanket.

As the blanket grew, I realised that it wouldn't grow too much as I just didn't have enough yarn. I could order some more and sit tight and wait. Who wants to do that though? So I decided to incorporate some white yarn in to it. It just didn't look right. After frogging and trying again, I decided that I would just finish it off and hope for the best.

I do believe that the new-born recipient I have in mind for this blanket will be on the small side like his/her siblings!

So I'm hoping the blanket will be just right for the early days.

After a light block and a spritz of lovely linen spray (Egyptian Cotton!) I'm putting this one away for the little one to arrive and be snuggled up in it.

Hexagon Afghan

I finally got started on the Hexagon afghan from Lucy's pattern. It is very easy to follow and once you make one you can go really fast on the others. I'm anxious to give this a try in thread just to see how it will turn out. I think these would make a great Christmas stocking, I may have to give that a try. Thanks Lucy for figuring this out for all of us.
